This position is under direction of the Fire Chief and/or their designee, supervises and conducts fire and life safety code development, inspections and enforcement. Responsible for planning, organizing and leading the Fire Prevention division, developing and enforcing fire and life safety codes, examining plans, fire education, investigation, pre-fire plans, hydrants and records management. Performs complex administrative and supervisory work in coordination with emergency and non-emergency activities of the Fire/Rescue Department. Ensures compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of quality and safety. Supervises subordinate officers through the chain of command. Performs related work as directed.
- Schedules, coordinates, and teaches educational programs for personnel, to include medical training and education on all aspects of patient care delivery. If qualified, may respond to fires and other related emergencies and function in the capacity of a firefighter.
- Assists with training field personnel.
- Supervises, trains and evaluates crews according to established procedures, departmental guidelines, and regulatory requirements applicable to the work; assists in formulation and delivery of training procedures and performs in-service training of personnel; enforces departmental rules, policies and regulations; assists in the development and planning of emergency response.
- Assists with and provides recommendations in areas of training, planning, coordinating and directing of the Department, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.
- Conducts training of staff in all aspects of firefighting and emergency medical techniques.
- Supervises assigned staff, supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; assisting with selection of new employees; acting on employee problems; evaluating employee performances and recommending/approving employee disciplinary actions.
- Coordinates training schedules with managers and supervisors. Oversees and is responsible for in-service training lectures/classes. Maintains training and other records using various computer systems.
- Schedules and conducts classes including, but not limited to: CPR, ACLS, PALS and/or Handtevy. Maintains all required certifications for EMTs and Paramedics ensuring they are recorded according to Florida Statutes.
- Provides administrative support to management as assigned.
- Reviews the work of subordinate staff for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.
- Attends required meetings, conferences, training courses and seminars to maintain knowledge of industry trends and technology as required or directed.
- Performs administrative work as required including conducting and attending meetings, preparing and reviewing reports, memos, schedules and correspondence, assisting with department/division budgets.
- Functions within the Emergency Operations Center as assigned.
- Pursues grant funding opportunities by researching and completing grant applications and following through to completion including compliance reporting and monitoring.
- Prepares and/or reviews a variety of reports and documents including inspection reports, plan review reports, training records and reports, checklists, logs, schedules, budget documents, statistical reports, rosters, personnel records, performance appraisals, memos, correspondence, etc.; reviews reports prepared by subordinate staff or as required/assigned.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as supervisors, subordinate staff, other County supervisors and employees, civic/community organizations, volunteers, various other Local, State and Federal agencies, Department personnel in other jurisdictions, vendors, insurance company representatives, business/property owners and the general public.
- Works on various committees as assigned or appropriate; represents the Department at County/community meetings as required.
- Operates and maintains assigned vehicle.
- Operates a variety of equipment which may include a computer, printer, telephone, two-way radio, calculator, copier, etc.
- Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests.
- May function in a command role or as a group supervisor during emergency incidents.
- Performs related duties as required.

Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License
Must possess an EVOC Certification.
Must possess and maintain a Florida Fire Instructor I, II, or III certification.
Must possess and maintain a Florida Live Fire Instructor I certification.
Must possess Florida State Hazardous Materials Technician certification.
Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
Must possess and maintain a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or a Handtevy Certification.
Must obtain and maintain BLS, ACLS and PALS Instructor Certifications within one (1) year of hire.
Must obtain and maintain either PALS or Handtevy Instructor Certifications within one (1) year of hire.
Fire Instructor II or III, Pump Operations, Aerial Operations, Fire Hydraulics, Fire Officer I and/or Florida Certified Fire Investigator Certifications preferred.
Must possess the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications:
ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
IS-700: National Incident Management System, an Introduction
IS-800: National Response Framework, an Introduction
ICS-300 and ICS-400 preferred or must be obtained with eighteen (18) months of hire.
The range for this position is $65,713.64 - $99,990.96. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
