Florida's Emancipation Day
Wednesday, May 20, 2026
Description

May 20, 1865, is an important date in the history of Florida because it marks the day slavery officially ended in the state. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, freedom did not reach many enslaved people in the South until Union troops arrived to enforce it. On May 20, 1865, Union General Edward McCook arrived in Tallahassee and publicly announced that enslaved African Americans in Florida were free.
This day represents a significant moment of freedom, hope, and new beginnings for thousands of African Americans throughout Florida. Today, May 20th is remembered as Florida’s Emancipation Day and serves as a reminder of the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of those who endured slavery while honoring the continuing legacy of Black history and culture throughout the state.
